What is an architectural design brief?

An architectural design brief is a list of your desired outcomes and requirements that are to be accommodated in your house design, whether a new build, extension or renovation. The architectural design brief forms the very beginning of your project. A thorough and informative design brief is an imperative part of Farren Architect’s design process as it paves the way for a successful project.

How do we gather the information required?

At the beginning of a project, we work closely with you to help establish your own unique brief. We meet you and get to know you and how you live. We want to understand your needs and drivers and understand what it is that you want, and what you don’t want. We ask questions to gain an understanding of how you live, what your priorities are, and how you want to use your home. We want to know your ambitions, expectations, your design and style preferences, and requirements for your home. The more information we can obtain from you at this stage, the more effective our design will be.

What information do we need?

It can be tricky to know what information to give us. Farren Architects is experienced in covering a vast range of questions to help you think of the details of your project, making this stage of the project easier and more enjoyable for you. We find the 3 most important things to acquire from you are the accommodation brief, site details and your budget considerations. The information we receive from you also covers design functionality, sustainability and energy efficiency, and timeframe so that your project is achievable.

Once we get an understanding of what you want and need, we put all the information we have gathered from our initial discussions on to paper. We have lots of discussions with you to make sure you are happy with what we are doing and that we are on the right track.

It is often useful to have flexibility within your design ideas. This allows us scope to be creative and offer design options you may not have thought of. This approach can help align your brief and budget, without compromising on the things that are important to you.

Why is the brief important?

The architectural design brief ensures that all the issues important to you are considered from the outset of your project letting us deliver exactly what you want. Just like every design, every brief is unique. It is vital the brief is clear from the outset of the project to help define the important parts and what we are working towards. We ensure our understanding and views are aligned with yours, which ensures we are working towards the same goal – to design a home that is uniquely yours.

We would love to hear from you if you have a project you wish to discuss.
