The client wished to extend to the rear of their semi-detached dwelling. The existing house spanned 3 storeys, with lower ground being a basement level with associated small external terrace/lightwell to the front & rear. Ground level housed the living space with a small linear void to its rear wall, not generous enough in size to meaningfully connect it to its lower ground level kitchen & dining room. Having studied the existing house layout, we proposed that, in gaining some extra square footage at ground level by extending, they could also relocate their kitchen and dining to consolidate these complimentary social spaces all onto the one floor. The office/games room was allocated to the lower ground level, where it could benefit from more privacy.
The proposed extension itself was articulated to remain subsidiary to the host dwelling, being set back and sloped down towards the front facade, whilst stretching out past the house into the rear garden plot with two distinctive roof forms inclining to introduce sunlight deep into the newly elongated plan.
