Client Aspirations
To design a bespoke home sited within a farm stead and adjacent to an existing listed cottage. Our client required a family home that would cater for their future needs which incorporated the wonderful views of the open countryside and mountains beyond.
Challenges
Respectful consideration of the adjacent listed cottage; adjacent to large 2 storey agricultural sheds; located within a valley and the edge of a village; located within a working farm yard
Our Response
We designed a bespoke house that has a sense of permanence and composure evocative of traditional settlements compatible with old cottages of this nature. The design compliments the cottage by being borne out of compatible traditional settlement patterns of a historic and special character, namely the bawn and clachan type settlements characteristic of rural farm type settlements. Accommodation includes living/dining/kitchen, lounge, playroom, master bedroom with en-suite/dress area, 3 bedrooms, family bathroom and utility room over two floors.
The house has been designed as 2 distinct forms arranged to frame a private outdoor space that is protected from the road/visual intrusion. The inverted plan design of the 2 storey block with kitchen/dining/living space located on 1st floor, maximises the long range panoramic views of the mountains.
