Client Aspirations
Our clients sought a bespoke contemporary design that prioritised natural light, large glazed areas to maximise views over Dungloe Bay and Inishfree Island, and a strong indoor-outdoor connection. High ceilings and a central kitchen for family gatherings were key requirements. The design also needed to accommodate three generations of family living.
Challenges
The site's location within an "Especially High Scenic Amenity" area presented significant constraints. This designation recognises sublime natural landscapes synonymous with Donegal's identity, allowing extremely limited development. Our primary challenge was to ensure the extension integrated seamlessly with the existing dwelling without becoming visually prominent in this sensitive landscape.
Our Response
Located in the beautiful Gaeltacht region known as the Rosses in County Donegal, with spectacular views overlooking the Atlantic, we designed alterations to the existing dwelling, including a side extension that integrates with the adjacent rockface, creating a natural screening effect. The project encompasses changes to the front façade, a carport, domestic garage, external roof link and covered external amenity spaces.
To maximise the site's potential, we incorporated extensive glazing to frame the spectacular views over Dungloe Bay and Inishfree Island. A covered outdoor seating area, usable year-round, extends the living space into the landscape. We installed glass balustrades to provide protection from the elements without obstructing the amazing vistas, allowing uninterrupted enjoyment of the coastal scenery.
The design draws inspiration from Donegal's rich architectural heritage while applying contemporary principles. We used dark tones, corrugated metal cladding, and natural stone to blend with the landscape. The extension features an open-plan kitchen/living/dining area, a separate den and an expanded first floor master suite.
Outdoor living is further enhanced with the covered external area connected to the main living space, complete with an outdoor fire. A new garage includes storage for kayaks and cleaning facilities, further connecting the home to its coastal setting.
